Ventosilla carries the widest species list of any of our Spanish partridge grounds — red deer, Spanish ibex, wild boar and mouflon share it with the birds — and that means broken, rising country, which is exactly what produces a testing drive.

That mix is unusual and worth understanding. An estate managing for ibex and mouflon as well as birds is managing broken, rising ground with real cover — and broken ground is what produces testing partridge drives.

Toledo puts you inside easy reach of Madrid, which makes Ventosilla one of the simpler estates to reach for a short programme. The city itself is worth a day either side of the shooting.

For a party with mixed interests — some guns driven, some rifle — this is the estate that can hold both without splitting the group across two destinations.

How a Spanish Driven Day Runs

Driven Partridge shoots in Spain differ slightly from the UK in the manner that the day is conducted. A typical day consists of 4 or 5 drives and as the days are still quite long the day can operate in a relaxed but professional manner. Tapas will be taken after 2 drives (and after drive 4 on a 5 drive day) Lunch will be at the days end so there is no rush at all. The birds are fast and furious and test even the best guns. The weather is normally good so all can be Al-Fresco. You are always supplied with a loader or “stuffer” who carries all you gear and generally looks after you, this all combines to give you an overall most enjoyable experience.
