Scale matters on a partridge estate. Ground of this size lets drives be rested properly through a season, so birds are not pushed over the same line week after week — and it gives the keepers the room to present partridge high and wide off the La Mancha ridges rather than straight down the middle.
The terrain is classic central-Spanish meseta: open cereal and scrub with sharp breaks of slope. Guns are set below the crests, and the birds come over fast, curling on the wind. It rewards footwork and a quick second barrel more than it rewards a long reach.

When is the season at La Cuesta, and how does a day run?
1 October to 31 March. Twenty thousand hectares let the drives be rested through the season, so birds are shown fresh. A day is four or five drives, with tapas after the second drive and lunch at the end, and a loader looking after each gun throughout.
