Scale matters on a partridge estate. Ground of this size lets drives be rested properly through a season, so birds are not pushed over the same line week after week — and it gives the keepers the room to present partridge high and wide off the La Mancha ridges rather than straight down the middle.

The terrain is classic central-Spanish meseta: open cereal and scrub with sharp breaks of slope. Guns are set below the crests, and the birds come over fast, curling on the wind. It rewards footwork and a quick second barrel more than it rewards a long reach.

Because the estate does one thing, the infrastructure is built around it — loaders, secretaries, transport between drives and a day that runs to time without feeling hurried.

How a Spanish Driven Day Runs

Driven Partridge shoots in Spain differ slightly from the UK in the manner that the day is conducted. A typical day consists of 4 or 5 drives and as the days are still quite long the day can operate in a relaxed but professional manner. Tapas will be taken after 2 drives (and after drive 4 on a 5 drive day) Lunch will be at the days end so there is no rush at all. The birds are fast and furious and test even the best guns. The weather is normally good so all can be Al-Fresco. You are always supplied with a loader or “stuffer” who carries all you gear and generally looks after you, this all combines to give you an overall most enjoyable experience.
