The Spanish Monteria is unique amongst all driven big game hunts in Europe. Firstly it is a very social affair beginning with all guns and guests (it is quite usual to have wives or friends in attendance) meeting for breakfast on the chosen estate. After this pegs are drawn and the hunt rules explained. The hunters are then taken to their pegs.
The hunt begins normally about noon with the hounds being released, there can be anywhere between three and six hundred dogs in packs of twenty depending on the size of the Monteria.
These work their way through the estate for approximately four hours giving exciting shooting for all participants.
When the hunt is finished the hunters return to the estate house for lunch whilst the game is brought down and laid out for photos etc.
The Monteria is a truly magnificent and exciting spectacle and a must for any big game hunter. If you have a ‘bucket list’ of things to do, this suggestion might trump some of your current ideas. Planning your Spanish monteria

Do I need a licence or permit to hunt a monteria in Spain?
Yes, and we arrange it. Every hunter needs a Spanish hunting licence and a permit for the rifle used; both are arranged by Hendry, Ramsay & Waters at the time of booking. A rifle (.270 or above) or shotgun and ammunition can be provided, so there is no need to travel with your own; if you would rather bring yours, tell us when you book and we will walk you through the paperwork and which airlines currently carry firearms.
What is included in a monteria package?
Your peg on the monteria, the day's hunting with the packs of hounds and the estate's monteros, breakfast and lunch on the estate, accommodation as part of the package, the Spanish licences, and a rifle or shotgun and ammunition if you need them. Trophy fees depend on the game taken and are quoted with the package.
What does a Spanish monteria cost?
A monteria is priced per peg, with the estate and the expected game setting the figure; trophy fees for red stag, fallow, mouflon and boar are quoted alongside. Tell us your dates and party size and we will come back with a full quotation, with no obligation.
When is the monteria season, and how does the day run?
1 October to 12 February. Guns and guests meet for breakfast on the estate, pegs are drawn and the rules explained; the hunt begins around noon when between three and six hundred hounds, in packs of twenty, are released and work the ground for about four hours. Everyone returns to the estate house for lunch while the game is laid out.
I am travelling from the USA. How does a monteria trip work?
Fly into Madrid or Málaga. We arrange the estate peg, the Spanish licences, your accommodation and the transfers, and a rifle is provided so you can travel without firearms. Wives, partners and friends are welcome on the day; a monteria is a social occasion as much as a hunt. Many of our American guests combine a monteria with driven partridge in the same week.

What game is taken on a monteria, and what rifle do I need?
Red stag, fallow buck, mouflon and wild boar are the usual quarry, and several species can come past a single peg in one day. A rifle of .270 or above is the standard recommendation; the estate can provide a rifle or shotgun and ammunition, and the Spanish hunting licence and rifle permit are arranged by Hendry, Ramsay & Waters when you book. Trophy fees are set per animal and quoted with the package, so you know the figure for each species before the hunt.
How many days should I allow, and where do I fly to?
Most monterias are a single day of hunting, so a trip is typically two or three nights: fly into Madrid or Malaga, transfer to the estate the day before, hunt the following day from breakfast to mid-afternoon, and travel home or on to a second estate the day after. Parties often combine a monteria with a driven partridge day in the same week.
How do I book, and what deposit is needed?
Tell us your dates, party size and what you want to hunt and we send a written programme and quotation. A 50% deposit confirms the booking and the balance is invoiced before you travel; if you book less than eight weeks before the start, the full amount is payable in place of the deposit. Overseas clients are invoiced in pounds sterling, the programme states whether VAT is included, and we recommend you take out your own cancellation insurance.
