Roe Deer Buck Stalking Season in Spain

Region Date From Date To
Andalucía 10th July 15th August
Andalucía 1st March 15th April
Castilla-La Mancha 1st September 30th September
Castilla-La Mancha 1st April 31st July

Spanish seasons are set region by region, not nationally. Each autonomous community publishes its own orden de vedas every year, so the dates above are given by region rather than for Spain as a whole. They come from the current season's orders: for Andalucía the Resolución of 1 June 2026, published in BOJA number 108 on 8 June 2026; for Castilla-La Mancha, Orden 83/2026 of 9 June 2026. The orders are reissued annually, so we confirm the dates for your ground when you book.

Stalked, Not Driven

This is the thing to understand before you book. Fallow, red deer and wild boar in Spain are driven to the guns on the montería, with hounds and a line of standing posts. The Spanish roe, the corzo, is not. It is stalked on foot, one rifle with one guide, at the two ends of the day. The Spanish name for it is rececho, and it is the same sport as a Scottish or English roe stalk rather than anything resembling a driven day. If you want both on one trip we arrange them as separate days, because they are separate kinds of hunting and they rarely sit on the same ground.

The season reads differently in the two regions. Andalucía's summer window, from 10 July, takes the buck in hard antler through the hottest weeks of the year, which means first light and last light and very little in between. Castilla-La Mancha opens on 1 April and runs to the end of July, so it covers the buck from clean antler in spring through to the rut, and it gives the longer choice of dates of the two.

Roe Doe Stalking Season in Spain

Region Date From Date To
Andalucía, under the population-control provision 15th November 15th January
Castilla-La Mancha, female-only period 1st December 21st February

Doe stalking in Spain is management rather than trophy sport, and the two regions handle it differently. Castilla-La Mancha sets a straightforward female-only period in its orden de vedas. Andalucía does not open a general doe season at all: does are taken by stalking under a population-control provision in the same resolution, which means what may be taken is governed by the estate's approved technical hunting plan rather than by the calendar alone. In both regions the cull is agreed with the estate before you travel rather than decided on the morning, so tell us at the time of booking if a doe day is what you want.

The Day Itself

Either in the early morning with dawn breaking and the dew still on the grass, or in an evening outing where fading light is your greatest enemy, a roe stalk is your opportunity to see the day from a new perspective, as you hunt this most elusive and beautiful of deer. Our guides will use their knowledge of the ground to help you find your buck, in a stalk where every quiet footstep may be critical, and they will take you to the point where, with your heart pounding with excitement, it is time to take a steady aim and then inspect your prize.

A rifle can be provided if you would rather not travel with your own, and we arrange the Spanish licence, insurance and permits that a visiting rifle requires as part of the booking. Tell us which region and which window you are aiming for and we will build the trip around it.

The roe is a small deer, with a body length of 95–135 cm, a shoulder height of 65–75 cm and a live weight of 15–35 kg. Only the buck carries antlers, short and erect rather than branched. The coat is golden red in summer, darkening to brown or almost black in winter, with lighter undersides and a white rump patch, and the tail is so short as to be barely visible. There is more on the beast, and on the other countries in which we arrange roe, on the roe deer stalking page, on roe in Scotland and on roe in England. For everything else we run in Spain, see hunting in Spain.
