The Roe Deer is a relatively small Deer, with a body length of 95–135 cm (3.1–4.4 ft), a shoulder height of 65–75 cm (2.1–2.5 ft), and a live weight of 15–35 kg (33–77 lb). It has rather short, erect antlers and a reddish body with a grey face. Its hide is golden red in summer, darkening to brown or even black in winter, with lighter undersides and a white rump patch; the tail is very short (2–3 cm or 0.8–1.2 in), and barely visible. Only the males have antlers.

Planning your roe deer stalking trip to Scotland
Straight answers to the questions visiting guns ask us most, whether you are travelling from elsewhere in the UK, from Europe or from the United States.
Do I need a firearms permit to stalk roe deer in Scotland?
Only if you bring your own rifle. A visitor from outside Great Britain needs a UK visitor's rifle permit, and the application must be made by a sponsor resident in Great Britain. Hendry, Ramsay & Waters acts as your sponsor and submits the application to Police Scotland on your behalf. Police Scotland says a typical application takes up to six weeks to process, so we ask for your details at least six weeks before you travel. The Police Scotland fee is £48 per visitor, or £240 for a group application. You will need a copy of your home firearms licence (European visitors: your European Firearms Pass) or, where you hold neither, a letter of good character from your police or government. Carry the permit with you and declare your guns and permit to UK Border Force when you arrive.
If you do not have a rifle, or would rather not travel with one, an estate rifle (.240 or above) and ammunition are provided, zeroed and ready, and you use it under the supervision of your stalker under the UK's borrowing exemption. No permit is needed for this, and it is how most of our overseas guests choose to stalk. If you bring your own rifle, your stalker will check its zero on the estate's target before you go on the hill, because a rifle that has travelled in an aircraft hold can shift.

What is included in a day's roe deer stalking?

What does roe deer stalking in Scotland cost?
Roe stalking is normally priced per outing or per day, with a trophy fee for a buck that depends on its quality. Prices vary by estate and by the time of the season, so we quote each trip individually. Send us your dates and party size and we will come back with a full quotation, with no obligation.
When is the roe deer season in Scotland?
Roe bucks: 1 April to 20 October. Roe does: 21 October to 31 March. The best trophy bucks are found on good arable ground with mixed woodland; the rut, from late July into August, is a favourite time for a summer buck.
I am travelling from the USA. How does a roe stalking trip work?
Fly into Edinburgh, Glasgow or Inverness, whichever is nearest the estate we choose together. If you are bringing your own rifle we sponsor your UK visitor's permit (allow six weeks); if not, an estate rifle is waiting for you, so you can travel light. We arrange the estate, the guide, your accommodation and the permits, and we advise on which airlines currently carry firearms. What does a roe stalking outing look like?
Roe are stalked at dawn and dusk, when they are on the move: an early outing with the dew still on the grass, or an evening outing where the fading light is the limit. Trophy bucks are found on good arable ground with a mix of hardwood and softwood woodland; the hill ground holds smaller heads. Your stalker takes you on foot, or to a high seat, and the shot is normally taken from a bipod or sticks at modest range. An estate rifle of .240 or above and ammunition are provided if you are not bringing your own.
How do I book, and what deposit is needed?
Tell us your dates, party size and what you want to hunt and we send a written programme and quotation. A 50% deposit confirms the booking and the balance is invoiced before you travel; if you book less than eight weeks before the start, the full amount is payable in place of the deposit. Overseas clients are invoiced in pounds sterling, the programme states whether VAT is included, and we recommend you take out your own cancellation insurance.
