Deer Stalking in Scotland for American Hunters

No. Every estate we use provides a stalking rifle (.270 or similar) and ammunition, which you use under the supervision of your stalker. No UK permit is needed for this, and it is how most of our American guests choose to stalk: no airline firearms paperwork, nothing to declare at the border, and no eight-week wait.

If you would rather bring your own rifle, you need a UK visitor’s firearm permit, and the application must be made by a sponsor resident in Great Britain. Hendry, Ramsay & Waters acts as your sponsor and submits it to Police Scotland for you; allow at least eight weeks before you travel. The Police Scotland fee is £48 per visitor (£240 for a group application) and our charge for arranging the permit is £150 + VAT per person. You will need a copy of your home firearms licence or, where you hold none, a letter of good character from your police or government. Check that your airline currently carries firearms before you book flights.

Edinburgh, Glasgow or Inverness, whichever is nearest the estate we choose together. Edinburgh has the most direct connections from the US and the estates we use are typically 90 minutes to three hours’ drive from it. We advise on transfers or a hire car once the estate is fixed, and can arrange airport transfers as part of the package.

A professional stalker guiding you one-to-one for each day on the hill, access to the ground, the use of an estate rifle and ammunition, transport on the estate, trophy preparation (head cleaning) and third-party liability insurance. We organise your accommodation at whatever level you prefer, from the estate’s own hotel to a five-star lodge, and every permit is arranged before you arrive. Not included: trophy fees for heads above the agreed size, trophy shipping, gratuities and, if you bring your own rifle, the visitor’s permit.

Our Scottish programmes are priced in pounds sterling and quoted for your party. As a worked example from our current 2026 red stag offer: four nights’ bed and breakfast in the estate’s own hotel with three days of guided stalking, two representative stags of up to 10 points, rifle hire and head cleaning is £3,674 + VAT (£4,409 including VAT at 20%); the same programme staying at the estate’s second hotel on the edge of the ground is £3,090 + VAT (£3,708 including VAT). Heads above 10 points are charged at £150 + VAT per point.

The dollar figure follows the exchange rate on the day you pay. As an illustration only, at £1 = US$1.30 those packages are roughly US$5,700 and US$4,800 respectively. Hinds and roe bucks are priced differently (per day, or per buck), so send us your dates and party size and we will come back with a full quotation in pounds, with no obligation.

Red stags: 1 July to 20 October, with the rut through late September and October. Red hinds: 21 October to 15 February. Roe bucks: 1 April to 20 October. Roe does: 21 October to 31 March. Fallow bucks: 1 August to 30 April. Sika stags: 1 July to 20 October. October is the busiest month for American parties, because a stag in the rut can be combined with driven pheasant or partridge in the same week.

Yes. Many of our American guests take a stag or a roe buck and a day’s driven pheasant or partridge in the same trip; estate shotguns and cartridges are provided, so there is still nothing to carry. Some parties go on to Spain for driven partridge on the same journey. Tell us your dates and we will build one itinerary.
