Based in Newburgh, Fife, we‘ve welcomed sportsmen and women from around the world to enjoy the very finest hunting and wing shooting. We believe that we’re the oldest because HRW began life in the 1950′s as Major Neil Ramsay’s Sporting Agency. Neil was more than passionate about field sports – he had the vision to pioneer the concept of fellow private estate owners opening their doors to paying guests, who could enjoy sport previously the preserve of landowners and their friends. We believe that we’re the best because our clients tell us so – coming back year after year. From a day’s sport to a tailor made package of airport collection, hotel and estate bookings, transport and guiding in the field, we take care of the details and you concentrate on having a great time. The company may have grown since Neil’s day but his concept remains – a great day’s sport is more than just a day out. In 2009 the company increased its focus on providing sporting shooting throughout the calendar year in the United Kingdom while also developing partnerships in Europe and around the world where we can provide quality hunting for many species. Hendry, Ramsay and Waters (Worldwide Ltd) is currently owned and operated by Vernon Waters who offers a very personalized service to clients with all packages tailored to suit your individual or group needs. Scotland is synonymous with grouse but ask about our superb driven pheasant, partridge and woodcock shooting. We also offer mixed bird hunting and wing shooting to suit a wide variety of tastes and budgets. Scotland is rightly famous throughout the world for deer stalking too and we can offer the discerning sportsman prime hunting for Red Deer Stags and Hinds, Roe Deer Bucks and Does, as well as Fallow and Sika Deer. Whether your objective is a trophy head or a thrilling stalk, we will provide for your every need. *Savour the prospect, enjoy the day and relive the excitement with a host of memories.* Click on the [Hunting in Scotland](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/scotland/) button to obtain further information about this superb sport or on [Latest Offers](https://scothunt.co.uk/shooting-available/) for details of forthcoming hunts. Hire guns provided, permits arranged, flights into Edinburgh. Canonical page: https://scothunt.co.uk/bird-shooting-scotland-for-american-hunters/ Provider: Hendry, Ramsay & Waters (https://scothunt.co.uk/) · +44 1337 840600 · info@scothunt.co.uk ## Scottish grouse and partridge, arranged from the United States The red grouse is the one game bird that exists nowhere but Britain and Ireland, and a day on a Scottish moor in August or September is the trip most American wingshooters have in mind when they think of Scotland. It is simpler to arrange than most expect: an overnight flight to Edinburgh or Inverness, a moor a couple of hours up the road, and hire guns and cartridges waiting for you so that you travel with nothing more than your boots. Hendry, Ramsay & Waters has arranged grouse and partridge for American parties for many years. This page answers the questions we are asked from the US most often. For the shoots themselves, see [Grouse Shooting in Scotland](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/scotland/grouse-shooting/) and [Partridge Shooting in Scotland](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/scotland/partridge-shooting/). ## What an American party needs to know - **No firearms to carry** Hire guns and cartridges are provided and you shoot under the UK’s borrowing exemption; no permit needed. Bringing your own is possible with a visitor’s permit we arrange (allow six weeks). - **Fly to Edinburgh or Inverness** Direct flights from several US cities to Edinburgh; Inverness for the northern moors. Transfers or a hire car arranged once the shoot is fixed. - **Driven or walked-up** Driven grouse needs a full team of eight or nine guns and is priced per brace; walked-up grouse over dogs suits two to six guns and is priced per gun per day. - **Priced in pounds, quoted for your party** Grouse per brace or per gun-day, partridge per bird on the bag shown; hotel, transport and gun hire added at the level you choose. ## Grouse, partridge or both Grouse is the first choice for August and September; partridge over heather, driven off high banks so that the birds fly like grouse, is the choice from September to January at a much lower cost per bird. October is the month to combine them, and to add a red stag in the rut in the same week. Tell us your dates and the bag you have in mind and we will match you to the right moor or shoot. ## What we arrange in Scotland - [Grouse shooting](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/scotland/grouse-shooting/) - [Partridge shooting](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/scotland/partridge-shooting/) - [Pheasant shooting](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/scotland/pheasant-shooting/) - [Woodcock shooting](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/scotland/woodcock-shooting/) - [Red deer stalking](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/scotland/red-deer-stalking/) - [Roe deer stalking](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/scotland/roe-deer-stalking/) ## Planning your Scottish grouse or partridge trip from the USA ### Do I need to bring my own shotguns to shoot in Scotland? No. We arrange hire guns and cartridges for you and you shoot under the UK’s borrowing exemption, so no permit is needed. Most of our American guests choose this: no airline firearms paperwork, nothing to declare at the border, and no six-week wait. If you would rather bring your own guns, you need a UK visitor’s shotgun permit, and the application must be made by a sponsor resident in Great Britain. Hendry, Ramsay & Waters acts as your sponsor and submits it to Police Scotland for you; Police Scotland says a typical application takes up to six weeks, so we ask for your details at least six weeks before you travel. The Police Scotland fee is £48 per visitor, or £240 for a group application. You will need a copy of your home firearms licence or, where you hold none, a letter of good character from your police or government. Check that your airline currently carries firearms before you book flights. ### Which airport do I fly into from the United States? Edinburgh, Glasgow or Inverness, whichever is nearest the moor or the shoot. Edinburgh has the most direct connections from the US; Inverness is the airport for the northern moors. We advise on transfers or a hire car once the shoot is fixed, and can arrange airport transfers as part of a multi-day package. ### What is the difference between driven and walked-up grouse? On a driven day you stand in a line of butts while a team of beaters brings the coveys over you: fast, low and unforgiving, and the most sought-after day in British shooting. A driven day needs a full team, usually eight or nine guns, and is priced per brace on the bag agreed for the day. On a walked-up day a party of two to six guns walks the moor behind pointers or spaniels and shoots the birds they flush; it is priced per gun per day, costs far less, and is the way most American guests first meet the red grouse. ### What does grouse or partridge shooting in Scotland cost in dollars? Scottish shooting is priced in pounds sterling and quoted for your party, not sold from a price list. Driven grouse is priced per brace on the agreed bag and is the most expensive driven bird in Britain; walked-up grouse is priced per gun per day; driven partridge is priced per bird on the bag you want shown and gives the feel of a grouse day at a much lower cost per bird. Hotel, transport and gun hire are added at the level you choose. The dollar figure follows the exchange rate on the day you pay. [Send us your dates, party size and the bag you have in mind](https://scothunt.co.uk/book-a-bird-shooting-trip/) and we will quote the trip in full, in pounds, with no obligation. ### When are the Scottish bird seasons? Grouse: 12 August to 10 December, with driven days concentrated in August, September and October. Partridge: 1 September to 31 January. Pheasant: from 1 October. The best month to combine sports is October, when a red stag in the rut, driven grouse and driven partridge can all be shot in the same week. ### Can I combine grouse or partridge with stalking, or with Spain? Yes. Many of our American guests take a day on the moor and a red stag or roe buck in the same trip; see our [guide to Scottish stalking for American hunters](https://scothunt.co.uk/deer-stalking-scotland-for-american-hunters/). Some parties go on to Spain for [driven partridge](https://scothunt.co.uk/partridge-shooting-spain-for-american-hunters/), where the season runs to 31 March. Tell us your dates and we will build one itinerary. ### Who arranges grouse and partridge shooting for American hunters? Hendry, Ramsay & Waters (Scothunt) is a Scottish sporting agency based in Fife, with driven and walked-up grouse on estates in Scotland and the north of England and several of Scotland’s finest partridge shoots. We arrange single days and multi-day packages for sporting clients from the United States, the UK and Europe, and we handle the shoot booking, the permits, the accommodation and the transport. Estate rifles provided, permits arranged, flights into Edinburgh, 2026 price example. Hendry, Ramsay & Waters has arranged Scottish stalking for American parties for many years. This page answers the questions we are asked from the US most often. For the estates and species, see [Hunting in Scotland](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/scotland/). ## What an American party needs to know - **No firearms to carry** Estate rifles and ammunition are provided and used under your stalker’s supervision; no permit needed. Bringing your own is possible with a visitor’s permit we arrange. - **Fly to Edinburgh** Direct flights from several US cities; Glasgow and Inverness for the west and north. Transfers or a hire car arranged once the estate is fixed. - **What is included** Stalker one-to-one, the ground, rifle and ammunition, estate transport, head cleaning, liability insurance. Accommodation at the level you choose. - **Priced in pounds, quoted for your party** Stags are priced per package or per stag; hinds and roe per day or per buck. Worked example below. ## A worked price example: red stags, 2026 From our current red stag offer on an estate 90 minutes north-west of Edinburgh: **four nights’ bed and breakfast in the estate’s own hotel, three days of guided stalking, two representative stags of up to 10 points, rifle hire and head cleaning — £3,674 + VAT (£4,409 including VAT at 20%)** . The same programme staying at the estate’s second hotel on the edge of the ground is £3,090 + VAT (£3,708 including VAT). Heads above 10 points are charged at £150 + VAT per point; trophy shipping, gratuities and the visitor’s firearms permit (if you bring your own rifle) are extra. The dollar figure follows the exchange rate on the day you pay; as an illustration only, at £1 = US$1.30 those packages are roughly US$5,700 and US$4,800. A 50% deposit confirms the booking and the balance is due 60 days before you arrive. ## What we arrange in Scotland - [Red deer stalking](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/scotland/red-deer-stalking/) - [Roe deer stalking](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/scotland/roe-deer-stalking/) - [Fallow deer stalking](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/scotland/fallow-deer-stalking/) - [Sika deer stalking](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/scotland/sika-deer-stalking/) - [Driven pheasant](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/scotland/pheasant-shooting/) - [Driven partridge](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/scotland/partridge-shooting/) ## Planning your Scottish stalking trip from the USA ### Do I need to bring my own rifle to stalk in Scotland? No. If you do not have a rifle, or would rather not bring one, every estate we use provides an estate rifle (.270 or similar) and ammunition, zeroed and ready, which you use under the supervision of your stalker. No UK permit is needed for this, and it is how most of our American guests choose to stalk: no airline firearms paperwork, nothing to declare at the border, and no eight-week wait. If you would rather bring your own rifle, you need a UK visitor’s firearm permit, and the application must be made by a sponsor resident in Great Britain. Hendry, Ramsay & Waters acts as your sponsor and submits it to Police Scotland for you; allow at least eight weeks before you travel. The Police Scotland fee is £48 per visitor (£240 for a group application) and our charge for arranging the permit is £150 + VAT per person. You will need a copy of your home firearms licence or, where you hold none, a letter of good character from your police or government. Check that your airline currently carries firearms before you book flights, and expect your stalker to check the rifle’s zero on the estate’s target before you go on the hill, because a rifle that has travelled in an aircraft hold can shift. ### Which airport do I fly into from the United States? Edinburgh, Glasgow or Inverness, whichever is nearest the estate we choose together. Edinburgh has the most direct connections from the US and the estates we use are typically 90 minutes to three hours’ drive from it. We advise on transfers or a hire car once the estate is fixed, and can arrange airport transfers as part of the package. ### What is included in a Scottish stalking package? A professional stalker guiding you one-to-one for each day on the hill, access to the ground, the use of an estate rifle and ammunition, transport on the estate, trophy preparation (head cleaning) and third-party liability insurance. We organise your accommodation at whatever level you prefer, from the estate’s own hotel to a five-star lodge, and every permit is arranged before you arrive. Not included: trophy fees for heads above the agreed size, trophy shipping, gratuities and, if you bring your own rifle, the visitor’s permit. ### What does red stag stalking in Scotland cost in dollars? Our Scottish programmes are priced in pounds sterling and quoted for your party. As a worked example from our current 2026 red stag offer: four nights’ bed and breakfast in the estate’s own hotel with three days of guided stalking, two representative stags of up to 10 points, rifle hire and head cleaning is £3,674 + VAT (£4,409 including VAT at 20%); the same programme staying at the estate’s second hotel on the edge of the ground is £3,090 + VAT (£3,708 including VAT). On that offer, heads above 10 points are charged at £150 + VAT per point; trophy rules differ from estate to estate with the quality of the stags, so treat this as a rough guide and we confirm the estate’s own terms with your quotation. The dollar figure follows the exchange rate on the day you pay. As an illustration only, at £1 = US$1.30 those packages are roughly US$5,700 and US$4,800 respectively. Hinds and roe bucks are priced differently (per day, or per buck), so [send us your dates and party size](https://scothunt.co.uk/book-a-deer-stalking-trip/) and we will come back with a full quotation in pounds, with no obligation. ### When are the Scottish stalking seasons? Red deer stags: 1 July to 20 October, with the rut through late September and October. Red deer hinds: 21 October to 15 February. Roe bucks: 1 April to 20 October. Roe does: 21 October to 31 March. Fallow bucks: 1 August to 30 April. Sika stags: 1 July to 20 October. October is the busiest month for American parties, because a stag in the rut can be combined with driven pheasant or partridge in the same week. ### Can I combine stalking with driven shooting or with Spain? Yes. Many of our American guests take a stag or a roe buck and a day’s driven pheasant or partridge in the same trip; estate shotguns and cartridges are provided, so there is still nothing to carry. Some parties go on to Spain for [driven partridge](https://scothunt.co.uk/partridge-shooting-spain-for-american-hunters/) on the same journey. Tell us your dates and we will build one itinerary. ### Who arranges deer stalking in Scotland for American hunters? Hendry, Ramsay & Waters (Scothunt) is a Scottish sporting agency based in Fife. We can also include Pigeon decoying in the true British fashion which can be fantastic due to the number of birds feeding in the area. They come from Schedule 1 of the Deer Act 1991, as amended by the Regulatory Reform (Deer) (England and Wales) Order 2007, which makes it an offence to take a fallow buck in England between 1 May and 31 July. Scotland sits under different law altogether, the Deer (Scotland) Act 1996, and its dates are not the same. If you are weighing one country against the other, read [fallow deer stalking in Scotland](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/scotland/fallow-deer-stalking/) alongside this page. Our English fallow ground is woodland and parkland on estates we know personally, and days are arranged one at a time for sporting clients rather than sold as a fixed package. That suits the beast. Fallow are a herd deer and they hold to cover through the middle of the day, so a buck is usually taken on a slow, quiet stalk into the wind at first or last light, or from a high seat on enclosed ground. Your stalker chooses the approach on the morning, on what the wind is doing and where the herd has been feeding. ## Fallow Deer Doe Stalking Season in England | **England** | **Date From** | **Date To** | | --- | --- | --- | | Fallow Doe | 1st November | 31st March | [Fill Inquiry Form](https://scothunt.co.uk/book-a-deer-stalking-trip/) The doe close season in England runs from 1 April to 31 October, so doe stalking is a winter business. It is also the management end of the season: the estate has a cull to take off the ground before spring, and that plan is agreed with the keeper before you arrive rather than decided on the day. Bare woodland and frost make for easier seeing and harder moving, and does are alert in a way the bucks are not. ## What the Law Asks of Your Rifle in England England and Wales set a legal minimum for the rifle and the bullet, and it is not the same minimum as Scotland's. For fallow, Schedule 2 of the Deer Act 1991 requires a rifle of a calibre not less than .240 inches, developing a muzzle energy of not less than 1,700 foot pounds, firing a soft-nosed or hollow-nosed bullet, in other words an expanding one. Scotland works instead from a minimum bullet weight and velocity, with no calibre floor at all, so a light rifle that is perfectly lawful for deer north of the border is not necessarily lawful for fallow here. That is why we suggest .270 or above. It clears the English minimum with room to spare for a beast the size of a mature buck, and it is what our stalkers carry. If you would rather not travel with a rifle at all, we provide one. ## Daylight Only, and Why Deer may not be shot at night in England. The Deer Act 1991 makes it an offence to take deer between one hour after sunset and one hour before sunrise, and the narrow exceptions that exist are for an occupier preventing serious damage to his own crops, not for sport. Every fallow day we arrange is therefore a daylight day, which in practice means the two ends of it. ## Bringing Your Own Rifle from Abroad A visitor living outside Great Britain needs a visitor's firearm permit, issued under section 17 of the Firearms (Amendment) Act 1988. You cannot apply for it yourself. A Great Britain resident sponsors you and applies to their own police firearms licensing department, and the permit can be granted for up to a year, which covers repeat visits inside one season. Allow at least six weeks before you travel. We arrange the permits at the time of booking, and the same permit serves whether you are stalking in England or in Scotland. Fallow carry the broad palmated antler that no other British deer has, and their coats vary more than any other, from common through menil to melanistic and leucistic. There is more on the beast itself, and on all three countries in which we arrange fallow, on the [fallow deer stalking](https://scothunt.co.uk/species/fallow-deer-stalking/) page. This most engaging game bird can offer so many challenges – driven off high banks or over deep valleys they can test the best high bird shots. They can burst like an exploding shell over hedges in the traditional manner, or they can be brought from the edge of a heather moor to offer a challenge to match some Grouse moors. You choose, we’ll help you find your perfect day ## About Partridges Partridges are birds in the Pheasant family, Phasianidae. They are a non-migratory Old World group. These are medium-sized birds, intermediate between the larger Pheasants and the smaller quail. Partridges are native to Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Partridges are ground-nesting seed-eaters. According to Greek legend, the first Partridge appeared when Daedalus threw his nephew, Perdix, off the sacred hill of Athena in a fit of jealous rage. Supposedly mindful of his fall, the bird does not build its nest in the trees, nor take lofty flights and avoids high places. ### More about… Partridges in Scotland are normally driven over heather moors giving the feel of a Grouse shoot but at a much lower cost per bird. When the topography is right then extremely high and testing birds are shown. HRW is proud to represent several of Scotland’s finest Partridge shoots. ### Key Information #### Rates Prices on application #### Can a Shotgun be provided Yes #### Accommodation Generally we organise accommodation for your stay at whatever level you prefer from self catering to 5*. #### Ammunition Ammunition supplied subject to availability #### Suggested Calibre Personal preference #### Permits Required All required permits arranged at time of booking. #### Nearest Airport Dependant on location of shoot. #### Flights & Bringing own Firearms Please consult with Hendry, Ramsay & Waters at time of booking for up to date airline carriers that allow firearms to be transported. # Pheasant Shooting in England > Pheasant shooting in England, 1 October to 1 February. Pheasants are characterised by strong sexual dimorphism, males being highly ornate with bright colours and adornments such as wattles and long tails. Males are usually larger than females and have longer tails. Males play a part in rearing the young. Pheasants typically eat seeds and some insects. The best-known is the Common Pheasant. Various other Pheasant species are popular in aviaries, such as the Golden Pheasant (Chrysolophus pictus). ## Driven Pheasant Shooting For sheer strength and power of flight Pheasants are hard to beat. From the 1st October until the end of January, Pheasants are the mainstay of many estates because they offer a great sporting challenge to sportsmen around the country. Driven high and fast, maybe drifting and curling with a tailwind to add extra spice, Pheasants are a sporting test of experience and skill. We are lucky to offer excellent value for money and fantastic sport in Scotland. We also have exclusive days on some of England’s most famous Pheasant and Partridge shoots which are certain to test the best shots in the game. ## Walked Up Pheasant / Mixed Game Shooting Days Walked up Pheasant and Partridge shooting is a different challenge as they burst up from cover to take the unwary by surprise. Red, fallow and sika stags are a winter quarry, taken between August and April, while the roe buck runs the other way round, from 1 April to 31 October, with his close season through the winter from 1 November to 31 March. Those dates come from Schedule 1 of the Deer Act 1991, as amended by the Regulatory Reform (Deer) (England and Wales) Order 2007, and they are English dates. Scotland removed the close season for male deer altogether in October 2023, so the two countries no longer read the same way on this point, although most Scottish estates still stalk to the traditional dates. Trophy bucks are normally found in good quality arable land with a mixture of hard and soft wood forest, with smaller headed bucks being in the hilly poorer quality land. Our English roe ground is that first kind: farmland and mixed woodland on estates we know personally, stalked one rifle at a time. The season does not read the same all the way through. From April the buck is in clean hard antler and holding a territory, which makes him findable but careful. By the rut in late July and early August he can be called, and a buck that would not show himself in May will cross open ground in daylight to a call. September and October are quieter stalking again. Tell us which of those you want and we will place the day accordingly. Either in the early morning with dawn breaking and the dew still on the grass, or in an evening outing where fading light is your greatest enemy, a roe stalk is your opportunity to see the day from a new perspective, as you hunt this most elusive and beautiful of deer. Our experienced stalkers will use their knowledge to help you find your roe deer, in a stalk where every quiet footstep may be critical, and they will guide you to the point where, with your heart pounding with excitement, it is time to take a steady aim and then inspect your prize. ## Roe Deer Doe Stalking Season in England | **England** | **Date From** | **Date To** | | --- | --- | --- | | Roe Doe | 1st November | 31st March | [Fill Inquiry Form](https://scothunt.co.uk/book-a-deer-stalking-trip/) The doe season is the management half of the year. The close season for does runs from 1 April to 31 October, so the work is done in bare woodland and short daylight, and the cull is agreed with the estate before you arrive. It is the part of the year that keeps the ground in the condition that produces the bucks, and for a stalker learning the species it teaches more in a week than the summer does in a month. ## What the Law Asks of Your Rifle in England This catches visitors out more often than anything else on the page. In England and Wales there is no lighter rule for roe. Schedule 2 of the Deer Act 1991 sets the same minimum for roe as for red and fallow: a rifle of a calibre not less than .240 inches, a muzzle energy of not less than 1,700 foot pounds, and a soft-nosed or hollow-nosed bullet, meaning an expanding one. Scotland sets its minimum by bullet weight and velocity instead, with no calibre floor, so a light rifle that is entirely lawful for roe north of the border is not lawful for roe here. If you stalk roe in Scotland with a .22 centrefire, it stays at home for England. That is why the suggested calibre below is .240 or above. We can provide a rifle and ammunition if you would rather not travel with your own. ## Daylight Only, and Why Deer may not be shot at night in England. The Deer Act 1991 makes it an offence to take deer between one hour after sunset and one hour before sunrise, and the exceptions are narrow ones for an occupier preventing serious damage to his own crops, not for sport. For roe that matters more than for most, because roe move at the very edges of the day, and the legal end of the evening arrives before the light does. We arrange the permits at the time of booking. Only the roe buck carries antlers, short and erect rather than branched, and the coat turns from golden red in summer to brown or near black in winter. Wild Boar are native across much of Northern and Central Europe, the Mediterranean region (including North Africa’s Atlas Mountains) and much of Asia, including Japan and as far south as Indonesia. Populations have also been artificially introduced in some parts of the world, most notably the Americas and Australasia, where they are regarded as both an important food resource and an environmental threat. The best season for hunting Moose is September and October. This is when the terrain is still dry and the weather is not so cold. November and December can also be good hunting months, though the snow and cold conditions can make the hunt more difficult. But if you are up for a new experience hunting on snow can be really exciting. The annual quota of 25-30 Moose annually is set during the spring. Different techniques of hunting are used depending on the terrain of the hunting area.In the open and less forested upper area we can use spotters to locate game and then sneak into position. The upper area is also suitable for hunting with a leashed dog, where the dog silently tracks down the game and creates shooting opportunities. The lower area is more densely forested and we prefer to use unleashed dogs to search for animals and, unlike the leashed dogs, bark at the game to try to pin it down and signal to the hunters. This form of hunting will get you close to the game and you will really feel up close and personal to the action. Grouse are driven over butts cut into the heather and come low, fast and downwind, which is why driven grouse is held to be the most demanding shooting in the world. Driven pheasant and partridge are presented from woodland and hillside, the birds curling high overhead. A driven day is a formal, sociable affair: a team of eight guns, a loader if you wish, elevenses in the field and lunch taken together. It suits clients who want the classic Scottish shooting day and the company that goes with it. ## Walked-Up Days Walked-up shooting is the older and quieter form. A small party walks the ground in line, usually with dogs working ahead, and birds are shot as they rise. Over grouse this means walking the heather with pointers or setters; over partridge and pheasant it means working the hedgerows, roots and rough ground. The bag is smaller than on a driven day and the shooting is less predictable, which is exactly its appeal. It asks more of the gun and of the legs, it puts you into the hill rather than on it, and it is the better choice for a party of two or three rather than a full team. ## Planning a Trip from Overseas Most of our overseas clients travel from the United States, and the practical questions are always the same ones. Fly into Edinburgh, Glasgow or Aberdeen depending on where the shooting is; Scotland is small enough that the ground is rarely more than a few hours from the airport. Firearms can be brought in under a visitor permit, which we arrange, or guns can be hired locally — many clients prefer to hire rather than travel with their own. Timing matters more than anything else. August and September put you on the grouse moor with the heather in flower; October and November give you driven pheasant and partridge with the woods turning; the winter months are the time for woodcock. Days are arranged individually for each party, and we will tell you plainly which weeks are worth travelling for and which are not. A trip is normally built around three or four shooting days with accommodation nearby, and there is enough in Scotland besides the shooting to bring a non-shooting partner along. ## Enquire Tell us what you would like to shoot, roughly when, and how many guns are in your party, and we will come back with what is available and what it involves. We arrange days for sporting clients from all over the world and have done so for more than thirty years. Most estates, including the ones we work with, still stalk to the traditional season shown above, because it matches the condition of the beast and the way the ground is managed through the year. The dates above are therefore the season we operate rather than a legal restriction. The close seasons for hinds and does remain in law and are unchanged. The male Fallow Deer is known as a buck, the female is a doe, and the young a fawn. Adult bucks are 140–160 cm (55–63 in) long with a 85–95 cm (33–37 in) shoulder height, and typically 60–100 kg (130–220 lb) in weight; does are 130–150 cm (51–59 in) long with a 75–85 cm (30–33 in) shoulder height, and 30–50 kg (66–110 lb) in weight. The largest bucks may measure 190 cm (75 in) long and weigh 150 kg (330 lb). Fawns are born in spring at about 30 cm (12 in) and weigh around 4.5 kg (9.9 lb). The life span is around 12–16 years. ### Key Information #### Rates Prices on application #### Can a Rifle be provided Yes #### Accommodation Generally we organise accommodation for your stay at whatever level you prefer from self catering to 5*. #### Ammunition Ammunition supplied subject to availability #### Suggested Calibre .270 or above. #### Permits Required All required permits arranged at time of booking. #### Nearest Airport Dependant on location of shoot. #### Flights & Bringing own Firearms Please consult with Hendry, Ramsay & Waters at time of booking for up to date airline carriers that allow firearms to be transported. Only if you bring your own shotgun. A visitor from outside Great Britain needs a UK visitor's shotgun permit, and the application must be made by a sponsor resident in Great Britain. Hendry, Ramsay & Waters acts as your sponsor and submits the application to Police Scotland on your behalf. Police Scotland says a typical application takes up to six weeks to process, so we ask for your details at least six weeks before you travel. The Police Scotland fee is £48 per visitor, or £240 for a group application. You will need a copy of your home firearms licence (European visitors: your European Firearms Pass) or, where you hold neither, a letter of good character from your police or government. Carry the permit with you and declare your guns and permit to UK Border Force when you arrive. If you would rather not travel with your own guns, we arrange gun hire and cartridges for you and you shoot under the UK's borrowing exemption, so no permit is needed. Most of our overseas guests choose this. Sources: [Police Scotland — visitor permits](https://www.scotland.police.uk/about-us/what-we-do/firearms-and-explosives-licensing/visitor-permits-and-11-6-authorities/) and [BASC — visiting the UK to shoot](https://basc.org.uk/firearms/visiting-the-uk-to-shoot/). ### What is included in a day's grouse shooting in Scotland? A driven day on one of the grouse moors we represent, with the keeper, beaters, flankers and pickers-up, and a loader where you want one; or a walked-up day over pointers or spaniels for a party of two to six guns. For multi-day packages we arrange transport, hotel accommodation, gun hire, cartridges and permits, so you only have to arrive. Tell us the dates, the number of guns and, for a driven day, the bag you have in mind. ### What does grouse shooting in Scotland cost? Driven grouse is priced per brace on the bag agreed for the day, and is the most expensive driven bird in Britain because the birds are wild and the moors are managed all year for one short season. Walked-up grouse is priced per gun per day and costs far less. Both vary by moor and by the date in the season, so we quote each day individually. [Send us your dates, party size and the bag you have in mind](https://scothunt.co.uk/book-a-bird-shooting-trip/) and we will quote the day in full, with no obligation. ### When is the grouse season in Scotland? 12 August to 10 December. Driven days are concentrated in August, September and October; walked-up days over dogs run through the whole season and are at their best in August and September when the heather is in flower. ### I am travelling from the USA. How does a Scottish grouse trip work? Fly into Edinburgh, Glasgow or Inverness, whichever is nearest the moor. If you are bringing your own shotguns we sponsor your UK visitor's permit (allow six weeks); if not, hire guns and cartridges are waiting for you. We arrange the moor, the guide, your accommodation and the permits, and we advise on which airlines currently carry firearms. Many of our American guests combine grouse with a red stag in the rut or with driven partridge in the same trip. Read our [guide for American hunters](https://scothunt.co.uk/bird-shooting-scotland-for-american-hunters/). ### Who arranges grouse shooting with Hendry, Ramsay & Waters? Hendry, Ramsay & Waters (Scothunt) is a Scottish sporting agency with driven and walked-up grouse on estates in Scotland and the north of England. We arrange single days and multi-day packages for sporting clients from the UK, Europe and the United States, and we handle the moor booking, the permits, the accommodation and the transport. [Fill in the enquiry form](https://scothunt.co.uk/book-a-bird-shooting-trip/) or [contact us](https://scothunt.co.uk/contact-us/). ### How many guns does a grouse day need? A driven day needs a full line of eight or nine guns to make the drives work, so single guns and small parties are placed on shared days or sold days. Walked-up days over pointers or spaniels suit two to six guns. Tell us the size of your party and we will tell you which is the better fit and which moors have dates. ### How do I book, and what deposit is needed? Tell us your dates, party size and what you want to hunt and we send a written programme and quotation. A 50% deposit confirms the booking and the balance is invoiced before you travel; if you book less than eight weeks before the start, the full amount is payable in place of the deposit. Overseas clients are invoiced in pounds sterling, the programme states whether VAT is included, and we recommend you take out your own cancellation insurance. ## More about… Partridges in Scotland are normally driven over heather moors giving the feel of a Grouse shoot but at a much lower cost per bird. When the topography is right then extremely high and testing birds are shown. HRW is proud to represent several of Scotland’s finest Partridge shoots for single says sport or multi-day packages with transport, hotel accommodation, gun hire and cartridges and permits arranged by our team. ## Planning your partridge shooting trip to Scotland Straight answers to the questions visiting guns ask us most, whether you are travelling from elsewhere in the UK, from Europe or from the United States. ### Do I need a shotgun permit to shoot partridge in Scotland? ### What is included in a day's driven pheasant shooting in Scotland? A driven day on one of the Scottish pheasant shoots we represent, with the keeper, beaters and pickers-up, and a loader where you want one; or a walked-up or mixed-game day for a smaller party, where several species may be shot in one day. For multi-day packages we arrange transport, hotel accommodation, gun hire, cartridges and permits, so you only have to arrive. Tell us the bag you want shown, the number of guns and the number of days. ### What does pheasant shooting in Scotland cost? Driven pheasant in Scotland is priced per bird on the bag agreed for the day, plus the cost of any hotel, transport and gun hire you ask us to arrange; walked-up and mixed days are priced per gun. Scottish pheasant days are good value against the famous English shoots, and we can offer both. [Send us your dates, party size and the bag you have in mind](https://scothunt.co.uk/book-a-bird-shooting-trip/) and we will quote the day in full, with no obligation. ### When is the pheasant season in Scotland? 1 October to 1 February. The birds are at their best from November, when they are fully grown and flying strongly, and a tailwind on a high drive adds the curl that makes a Scottish pheasant such a test. ### I am travelling from the USA. How does a Scottish pheasant trip work? Fly into Edinburgh, Glasgow or Inverness, whichever is nearest the shoot. If you are bringing your own shotguns we sponsor your UK visitor's permit (allow six weeks); if not, hire guns and cartridges are waiting for you. We arrange the estate, the guide, your accommodation and the permits, and we advise on which airlines currently carry firearms. Many of our American guests combine driven pheasant with a red stag in the rut or with driven partridge in the same October week. Read our [guide to grouse and partridge for American hunters](https://scothunt.co.uk/bird-shooting-scotland-for-american-hunters/) and our [guide to Scottish stalking for American hunters](https://scothunt.co.uk/deer-stalking-scotland-for-american-hunters/). ### Who arranges pheasant shooting with Hendry, Ramsay & Waters? Hendry, Ramsay & Waters (Scothunt) is a Scottish sporting agency representing pheasant shoots across Scotland and exclusive days on some of England's most famous pheasant and partridge shoots. We arrange single days and multi-day packages for sporting clients from the UK, Europe and the United States, and we handle the shoot booking, the permits, the accommodation and the transport. Red Deer stalking in Scotland is truly one of the most magical experiences that hunting in the UK can offer and we have some stunning estates to introduce you to where you will soak up the full ambience of a days Deer stalking in Scotland. ## Red Deer Hind Stalking Season in Scotland | **Scotland** | **Date From** | **Date To** | | --- | --- | --- | | Red Hinds | 21st October | 15th February | [Fill Inquiry Form](https://scothunt.co.uk/book-a-deer-stalking-trip/) **A note on the male close season in Scotland.** Scotland removed the statutory close season for male deer on 21 October 2023, so there is no longer a legal closed period for stags and bucks in Scotland. Most estates, including the ones we work with, still stalk to the traditional season shown above, because it matches the condition of the beast and the way the ground is managed through the year. The dates above are therefore the season we operate rather than a legal restriction. The close seasons for hinds and does remain in law and are unchanged. The Red Deer (Cervus Elaphus) is one of the largest Deer species. The Red Deer inhabits most of Europe, the Caucasus Mountains region, Asia Minor, Iran, parts of western Asia, and central Asia. It is the only species of Deer to inhabit Africa and can be found in the Atlas Mountains region between Morocco and Tunisia in north-western Africa. Red Deer have been introduced to other areas, including Australia, New Zealand and Argentina. In many parts of the world, the meat (venison) from Red Deer is used as a food source. ## Planning your red deer stalking trip to Scotland Straight answers to the questions visiting guns ask us most, whether you are travelling from elsewhere in the UK, from Europe or from the United States. ### Do I need a firearms permit to stalk red deer in Scotland? Only if you bring your own rifle. A visitor from outside Great Britain needs a UK visitor's firearm permit, and the application must be made by a sponsor resident in Great Britain. Carry the permit with you and declare your rifle and permit to UK Border Force when you arrive. If you do not have a rifle, or would rather not travel with one, an estate rifle (.270 or above) and ammunition are provided, zeroed and ready, and you use it under the supervision of your stalker under the UK's borrowing exemption. No permit is needed for this, and it is how most of our overseas guests choose to stalk. If you bring your own rifle, your stalker will check its zero on the estate's target before you go on the hill, because a rifle that has travelled in an aircraft hold can shift. ### What is included in a day's red deer stalking? A professional stalker guiding you one-to-one on the estate for the day, access to the ground, the use of an estate rifle and ammunition if you need them, and every permit arranged by us before you arrive. We organise your accommodation at whatever level you prefer, from self-catering to five-star, and advise on transfers from your arrival airport. Tell us what you want from the trip and we build the package around it. ### What does red deer stalking in Scotland cost? Red stag stalking is normally priced per stag taken, with a daily rate for the stalker and the ground; hinds are priced per day. Prices vary by estate and by the time of the season, so we quote each trip individually. As a worked example from our current 2026 red stag offer: four nights’ bed and breakfast on the estate with three days of guided stalking, two representative stags of up to 10 points, rifle hire and head cleaning is £3,090 + VAT (£3,708 including VAT) in the estate’s second hotel, or £3,674 + VAT (£4,409 including VAT) in the estate’s own hotel; heads above 10 points are £150 + VAT per point. [Send us your dates and party size](https://scothunt.co.uk/book-a-deer-stalking-trip/) and we will come back with a full quotation, with no obligation. ### When is the red deer season in Scotland? Red deer stags: 1 July to 20 October. Red deer hinds: 21 October to 15 February. The rut, when the stags roar on the hill, runs through late September and October and is the most sought-after time for a stag. ### I am travelling from the USA. How does a Scottish stalking trip work? Fly into Edinburgh, Glasgow or Inverness, whichever is nearest the estate we choose together. If you are bringing your own rifle we sponsor your UK visitor's permit (allow six weeks); if not, an estate rifle is waiting for you, so you can travel light. We arrange the estate, the stalker, your accommodation and the permits, and we advise on which airlines currently carry firearms. Many of our American guests combine a stag with a day's driven pheasant or partridge, or with roe buck stalking, in the same trip. Read our [guide for American hunters](https://scothunt.co.uk/deer-stalking-scotland-for-american-hunters/). ### Who arranges red deer stalking with Hendry, Ramsay & Waters? Hendry, Ramsay & Waters (Scothunt) is a Scottish sporting agency. We arrange red deer stalking on private Highland estates for sporting clients from the UK, Europe and the United States, and we handle the estate booking, the permits, the accommodation and the paperwork so that you only have to turn up and stalk. [Fill in the enquiry form](https://scothunt.co.uk/book-a-deer-stalking-trip/) or [contact us](https://scothunt.co.uk/contact-us/). ### How are trophy fees charged on a Scottish stag? As a rough guide only: every estate has its own rules, linked to the quality of its stags, so the figures below are an illustration rather than a tariff. Most stag programmes include a representative stag of up to a stated number of points in the price, and heads above that are charged per point; on our current 2026 offer, for example, a representative stag of up to 10 points is included and each point over 10 is £150 + VAT. Head cleaning is normally included, shoulder mounts and trophy shipping are quoted separately, and any levy for carcass damage is charged as it arises. We confirm the estate's own trophy rules with your quotation, and your stalker will tell you what is in front of you before you take the shot, so there are no surprises. ### How fit do I need to be, and what should I bring? Highland stags are stalked on open hill and a reasonable level of physical fitness is needed: expect several hours of walking, some of it steep, with the final approach on your stomach through wet heather. Bring broken-in waterproof boots, quiet muted clothing in layers, a waterproof jacket and trousers, gloves and a hat; the estate provides the rifle, the stalker and the pony or vehicle to bring the beast down. If you are bringing your own rifle, .270 or similar is the usual recommendation and it should be zeroed before you travel. Roe are stalked at dawn and dusk, when they are on the move: an early outing with the dew still on the grass, or an evening outing where the fading light is the limit. Trophy bucks are found on good arable ground with a mix of hardwood and softwood woodland; the hill ground holds smaller heads. Your stalker takes you on foot, or to a high seat, and the shot is normally taken from a bipod or sticks at modest range. An estate rifle of .240 or above and ammunition are provided if you are not bringing your own. ### How do I book, and what deposit is needed? The beast is native to the mountains of North Africa and is known there, and to most hunters, as the aoudad; in Spain it is the *arrui* . It was released into the sierras of the south-east in the 1970s, found the ground to its liking, and is now established there in good numbers on a scale that supports a managed hunt. ## The Ground We hunt 9,300 hectares of private land in Murcia, in the dry mountains of south-eastern Spain. It is high, broken country of rock and scrub, and it holds a healthy population, so sheep are seen on most hunting days. The going is varied rather than punishing: the guides pick the approach to suit the hunter, and hunters of all physical conditions are welcome. The ground is about one hour from Alicante and about four hours from Madrid. We recommend Alicante. You are met at the airport and driven to the hunting area, and an English-speaking guide is with you throughout. ## When to Come The season runs from 15 July to 15 February, and the two halves of it hunt quite differently. From July to the middle of September the country is very dry. That works in the hunter's favour, because the sheep come to water and are easier to find, and it is the part of the season that suits a trip built around family or a holiday as well as the hunt. From about 15 September to 15 November the rams are rutting. They move, they show themselves, and the weather is kind. If the trophy is the point of the trip, that is the window to ask for. ## How a Hunt Is Arranged The hunt is built around two full days on the hill with a guide, with accommodation on a full board basis in a good local hotel and airport transfers both ways. A translator is provided, rifle hire is included, and we arrange the Spanish hunting licence as part of the booking, so a visiting hunter does not have to deal with any of it. An extra day on the hill can be added, and an observer who is not hunting can travel with you and be accommodated on the same basis. If you would rather bring your own rifle we arrange the Spanish firearms import permit instead of the hire. Taxidermy and export are handled for you; trophies usually reach a client two to four months after the hunt. The rams are taken with no size limit, and a mature ram runs around 55 centimetres. Cull and female animals can be arranged on the same ground for a hunter who is managing a budget or who simply wants more days on the hill. Tell us which of those you are after when you enquire and we will build the trip around it. Spain carries more than one kind of mountain hunt. If the aoudad is on your list you may also want to look at [ibex hunting in Spain](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/spain/ibex-hunting/), which runs from November to April and is often taken on the same trip. For everything else we arrange in the country, see [hunting in Spain](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/spain/). ### Key Information #### Rates Prices on application #### Can a Rifle be provided Yes, rifle hire is included #### Accommodation Full board in a good local hotel, included #### Hunting Days Two full days, with extra days available #### Permits Required The Spanish hunting licence is arranged at the time of booking. Everything the estate currently does is built around red-legged partridge, and at that size the focus shows in how a whole season is run rather than in any single day of it. | **El Crespo** | **At a glance** | | --- | --- | | Region | Fuenllana, Ciudad Real | | Approximate area | 10,000+ ha / 24,700+ acres | | Sport in addition to partridge | Current estate programme is focused on red-legged partridge | | Usual arrival airport | Madrid-Barajas Granada and Madrid are a similar distance, near enough 200 km either way. Madrid is normally the easier connection from the UK. | [Fill Inquiry Form](https://scothunt.co.uk/book-a-bird-shooting-trip/) Ten thousand hectares is enough to rotate drives across a full season without ever returning to tired ground. On partridge, that discipline is the difference between a good estate and a great one — birds that have not been disturbed fly differently. Fuenllana sits in the Campo de Montiel, a high plateau of cereal, olive and holm oak. The slopes are long rather than steep, so drives tend to be wide, with birds arriving in numbers across a broad front. The focus on a single quarry means the calendar is built around the partridge season rather than fitted between other sport. ## The Value of our Shooting Package — El Crespo What a fully inclusive package covers here — full board on the estate in the staffed hacienda, all wines, spirits and soft drinks, return transfers from Madrid-Barajas, and ammunition, Spanish gun and hunting licences — with the point that overage is counted per gun, so each gun pays only for the birds it has shot. El Despeñadero is primarily a driven red-legged partridge estate, and its character comes from the fall of the land rather than from anything built. | **El Despeñadero** | **At a glance** | | --- | --- | | Region | Consuegra, Toledo | | Approximate area | c.2,000 ha / 4,940 acres | | Sport in addition to partridge | Primarily driven red-legged partridge | | Usual arrival airport | Madrid-Barajas Sixty minutes by road, per the estate. | [Fill Inquiry Form](https://scothunt.co.uk/book-a-bird-shooting-trip/) A smaller finca run for one quarry can be managed intensively. Every drive is known, every wind direction has a plan, and the keepers can read the ground far more precisely than is possible across twenty thousand hectares. The name means “the precipice”, and the ground earns it: the estate takes its character from a sharp break of slope, which is exactly the feature that produces high, fast birds without needing artificial staging. This suits a smaller party well — one team, one estate, no sense of sharing the ground with anybody else. ## The Value of our Shooting Package — El Despeñadero What a fully inclusive package covers here — full board on the estate in the staffed hacienda, all wines, spirits and soft drinks, return transfers from Madrid-Barajas, and ammunition, Spanish gun and hunting licences — with the point that overage is counted per gun, so each gun pays only for the birds it has shot. A specialist driven red-legged partridge estate on ground that rises towards the Sistema Central, so the birds arrive high. Scale enough to rest drives through a season, and near enough to build a short programme around. | **Fuentelfresno** | **At a glance** | | --- | --- | | Region | Fuentelahiguera de Albatages, Guadalajara | | Approximate area | c.15,000 ha / 37,100 acres | | Sport in addition to partridge | Specialist driven red-legged partridge | | Usual arrival airport | Madrid-Barajas | [Fill Inquiry Form](https://scothunt.co.uk/book-a-bird-shooting-trip/) Guadalajara rises away from the Madrid basin towards the Sistema Central, so the ground has more contour than the flatter parts of La Mancha. Drives use that relief, and the birds arrive high. Fifteen thousand hectares gives the same rotational advantage as the largest estates on this list: drives can be rested, and birds shown on ground they have not been pushed over recently. Proximity to Madrid makes this the easiest estate here to build a short programme around — land, shoot, and be back in the city the same evening if that is what suits. ## The Value of our Shooting Package — Fuentelfresno What a fully inclusive package covers here — full board on the estate in the staffed hacienda, all wines, spirits and soft drinks, return transfers from Madrid-Barajas, and ammunition, Spanish gun and hunting licences — with the point that overage is counted per gun, so each gun pays only for the birds it has shot. Month by month: - **October** — season opens. Warm, dry days and long light; the first driven days of the year. - **November** — the heart of the season. Settled weather, full coveys and the widest choice of dates. - **December** — cooler and often the sportiest flying. Dates either side of Christmas book early. - **January** — quiet, crisp days. Good value and easy availability after the New Year. - **February** — birds are strong and fast after a full season of showing. - **March** — the closing month. Warm afternoons and the last driven days until October. Every one of our eight estates shoots the same season. Dates are held on a first-come basis, and November and the days either side of Christmas go first. [Fill Inquiry Form](https://scothunt.co.uk/book-a-bird-shooting-trip/) There are numerous partridge shoots in Spain. We have selected **eight** , from Mallorca to Ciudad Real, each giving a different but exceptional experience. In southern Spain, within easy reach of Seville, programmes run with **bags from 500 driven birds a day** , with accommodation in an historic country house hotel — a former monastery — twenty minutes from the shooting estate. There is also the opportunity to visit the beautiful city of Seville and some of the great sherry bodegas. Alternatively, book a five-star programme on the central Spanish estates: bags from 500 driven birds a day, sport that will challenge the most experienced shots with fast, high birds, accommodation in the estate lodge, superb food and all services included. Madrid city and airport are just forty-five minutes away and ideal for a short break after the shoot. ## How a Spanish Driven Day Runs Driven partridge shoots in Spain differ slightly from the UK in the way the day is conducted. A typical day is four or five drives and, as the days are still quite long, the day runs in a relaxed but professional manner. Tapas are taken after two drives, and after the fourth drive on a five-drive day; lunch is at the end of the day, so there is no rush at all. The birds are fast and furious and test even the best guns. The weather is normally good, so everything can be al fresco. Every gun is supplied with a loader, or “stuffer”, who carries your gear and generally looks after you. Together this gives an altogether enjoyable day. This is how a day runs on all eight of our Spanish estates. Each estate page describes only what is particular to that ground — the drives, the lodge, the terrain and the travel. ## What Sets the Price A Spanish driven partridge programme is quoted for your party rather than sold from a price list. Three things set the figure: the **daily bag** you want shown, the **number of guns** in the party, and the **number of days** you shoot. Tell us those three and we will come back with a single, fully inclusive figure. **Bags start at 500 driven birds a day** , and a two-day programme of 1,000 driven birds is the usual shape of a trip. Larger bags are arranged on request — tell us the bag you have in mind and we will confirm the ground can carry it on your dates. Each estate has its own nuances, which are set out on its own page. | **Your fully inclusive package** | **What it covers** | | --- | --- | | Accommodation | Full board on the estate in the fully staffed hacienda or lodge | | Food and drink | All wines, spirits, beers and soft drinks | | Transfers | Return transfers to the estate from the arrival airport named on the estate page | | On the shoot | Ammunition, Spanish gun and hunting licences, a loader for every gun, and transport between drives | | Birds over the agreed bag | Counted individually, so each gun pays only for the birds he or she has shot — never a share of the party’s total | [Ask for a quotation](https://scothunt.co.uk/book-a-bird-shooting-trip/) ### Key Information #### Rates Prices on application #### Can a Shotgun be provided Yes #### Accommodation First class lodge or hotel. #### Ammunition Ammunition supplied. #### Suggested Calibre 28, 20, 16, 12. #### Permits Required All required permits arranged at time of booking. #### Nearest Airport Seville or Madrid. #### Flights & Bringing own Firearms Please consult with Hendry, Ramsay & Waters at time of booking for up to date airline carriers that allow firearms to be transported. ## Planning your driven partridge trip to Spain Straight answers to the questions visiting guns ask us most, whether you are travelling from the UK, from Europe or from the United States. ### Do I need a gun licence or permit to shoot partridge in Spain? Yes, and we arrange it for you. Every gun needs a Spanish hunting licence and, for their guns, a Spanish permit; both are included in our packages and arranged by Hendry, Ramsay & Waters before you travel, so you need only send us the details we ask for when you book. If you would rather not travel with your own guns, estate guns and cartridges are provided. If you are bringing your own, tell us at the time of booking and we will walk you through the paperwork and which airlines currently carry firearms. ### What is included in a Spanish driven partridge package? Our Spanish packages are fully inclusive: return transfers from the arrival airport (Madrid or Seville, depending on the estate), full board in the estate lodge or a first-class hotel with wines and drinks, transport on the shoot, a loader or secretary for each gun, ammunition, and the Spanish gun and hunting licences. Overage is counted per gun, so each gun pays only for the birds it has shot, not a share of the group's. ### What does driven partridge shooting in Spain cost? A Spanish programme is quoted for your party rather than sold from a price list. Three things set the figure: the daily bag you want shown (our days start at 300 birds a day and run to 400 and beyond), the number of guns in the party, and the number of days you shoot. Prices are on application. A package typically covers full board on the estate in the lodge or hacienda, all wines, spirits, beers and soft drinks, return transfers from Seville airport, ammunition, and the Spanish gun and hunting licences. Birds over the agreed bag are counted individually, so each gun pays only for the birds he or she has shot. [Send us those three](https://scothunt.co.uk/book-a-bird-shooting-trip/) and we will come back with a full quotation, with no obligation. ### When is the Spanish partridge season? 1 October to 31 March. A typical day is four or five drives with tapas after the second drive and lunch at the end of the day, usually in good weather and outdoors. ### I am travelling from the USA. How does a Spanish partridge trip work? Fly into Madrid or Seville; estate transport meets your flight and the transfer is included. Estate guns and cartridges are provided, so there is no need to travel with firearms, and we arrange the Spanish licences before you arrive. Full board, transfers and a loader are all in the package, so the only decision to make is the bag, the number of guns and the number of days. Madrid and Seville both make a fine short break after the shoot. Read our [guide to partridge shooting in Spain from the USA](https://scothunt.co.uk/partridge-shooting-spain-for-american-hunters/). ### Who arranges Spanish partridge shooting with Hendry, Ramsay & Waters? Hendry, Ramsay & Waters (Scothunt) is a Scottish sporting agency that has arranged driven partridge in Spain for UK, European and American sporting clients for many years, on eight estates from Mallorca to Ciudad Real, including La Cuesta. We book the estate, arrange the licences, the transfers and the accommodation, and look after you on the day. [Fill in the enquiry form](https://scothunt.co.uk/book-a-bird-shooting-trip/) or [contact us](https://scothunt.co.uk/contact-us/). ### What does a day on a Spanish partridge estate look like? Guns meet at the estate house for breakfast, pegs are drawn and the team is driven out to the first line of butts. A day is four or five drives, with a loader or secretary at each peg counting the birds, tapas after the second drive and a long lunch at the end of the day, usually outdoors in good weather. The birds are shown high and fast off the hillsides, and each gun pays only for the birds it has shot above the agreed bag. La Cuesta is a specialist driven red-legged partridge estate with room to rest its drives right through a season — so guns are shown birds that have not been pushed over the same line the week before. | **La Cuesta** | **At a glance** | | --- | --- | | Region | Montiel / Puebla del Príncipe, Ciudad Real | | Approximate area | c.20,000 ha / 49,400 acres | | Sport in addition to partridge | Specialist driven red-legged partridge | | Usual arrival airport | Madrid-Barajas, Málaga or Seville Roughly two and a half to three hours by road, with estate transport meeting the flight. | | Private aviation | A licensed aerodrome on the estate — **Aeródromo de La Cuesta, ICAO LEDC** — runway 10/28, 1,942 m of asphalt, 23 m wide. Restricted use: prior authorisation to land is required. Published in the *Boletín Oficial del Estado* and charted in the ENAIRE VFR guide. There is also a helipad at the finca for transfers. | [Fill Inquiry Form](https://scothunt.co.uk/book-a-bird-shooting-trip/) Scale matters on a partridge estate. Ground of this size lets drives be rested properly through a season, so birds are not pushed over the same line week after week — and it gives the keepers the room to present partridge high and wide off the La Mancha ridges rather than straight down the middle. The terrain is classic central-Spanish meseta: open cereal and scrub with sharp breaks of slope. Guns are set below the crests, and the birds come over fast, curling on the wind. It rewards footwork and a quick second barrel more than it rewards a long reach. Because the estate does one thing, the infrastructure is built around it — loaders, secretaries, transport between drives and a day that runs to time without feeling hurried. ## The Value of our Shooting Package — La Cuesta What a fully inclusive package covers here — full board on the estate in the staffed hacienda, all wines, spirits and soft drinks, return transfers from Madrid-Barajas, and ammunition, Spanish gun and hunting licences — with the point that overage is counted per gun, so each gun pays only for the birds it has shot. Full board on the estate in the staffed hacienda, all wines, spirits and soft drinks, return transfers from Madrid-Barajas, ammunition, the Spanish gun and hunting licences, a loader or secretary for each gun, and transport between drives. Overage is counted per gun, so each gun pays only for the birds it has shot. ### How do I get to La Cuesta? Fly into Madrid-Barajas, Málaga or Seville. The estate is roughly two and a half to three hours by road and estate transport meets your flight. For private aviation the estate has its own licensed aerodrome, Aeródromo de La Cuesta (ICAO LEDC, 1,942 m asphalt runway, prior authorisation required) and a helipad at the finca. ### When is the season at La Cuesta, and how does a day run? 1 October to 31 March. Twenty thousand hectares let the drives be rested through the season, so birds are shown fresh. A day is four or five drives, with tapas after the second drive and lunch at the end, and a loader looking after each gun throughout. Licences and permits, what a fully inclusive Spanish package contains and what a programme costs are answered in full on the hub page: [planning your driven partridge trip to Spain](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/spain/partridge-shooting/#planning-your-trip). Drives sit close together and the day is unhurried, which suits a party that would rather shoot well than shoot a lot. Big game and stalking can be arranged alongside the partridge. | **La Nava** | **At a glance** | | --- | --- | | Region | Castellar de Santiago, Ciudad Real | | Approximate area | c.3,200 ha / 7,900 acres | | Sport in addition to partridge | Big-game hunting and stalking can also be arranged | | Usual arrival airport | Madrid-Barajas Granada is nearer in a straight line, roughly 155 km against 220 km, but Madrid carries far more UK connections and is the usual routing. | | Private aviation | A licensed private airfield on the estate — **La Perdiz, ICAO LEIZ** , 1,917 m of asphalt, 30 m wide, with published elevation, runway designation, strength rating and radio frequency. Prior permission required. A separate helipad serves the lodge. | [Fill Inquiry Form](https://scothunt.co.uk/book-a-bird-shooting-trip/) A smaller estate shoots differently. Drives are close together, travel between them is short, and the day has an unhurried rhythm — which suits a party that wants to shoot well rather than simply shoot a lot. The position on the edge of the Sierra Morena foothills gives more relief than the open plains further north. Where the ground rises, partridge can be shown genuinely high. For guns who want to combine a driven partridge programme with stalking or big game in the same trip, this is the estate on the shortlist that makes that straightforward. Tell us what you want to add and we will put the itinerary together. ## The Value of our Shooting Package — La Nava What a fully inclusive package covers here — full board on the estate in the staffed hacienda, all wines, spirits and soft drinks, return transfers from Madrid-Barajas, and ammunition, Spanish gun and hunting licences — with the point that overage is counted per gun, so each gun pays only for the birds it has shot. A thousand hectares between Calvià and Andratx, steep and terraced under pine and maquis, where birds break from cover fast and close and change line as they cross. Driven and walked-up days, and the Balearic boc — a wild goat found nowhere else on earth. | **Las Barracas** | **At a glance** | | --- | --- | | Region | Calvià, Mallorca | | Approximate area | c.1,000 ha / 2,470 acres | | Sport in addition to partridge | Driven and walked-up partridge; Balearic boc (Mallorcan wild goat) | | Usual arrival airport | Palma de Mallorca | [Fill Inquiry Form](https://scothunt.co.uk/book-a-bird-shooting-trip/) Mallorcan partridge shooting is a different proposition from the La Mancha plains. The ground is steep, terraced and covered in pine and maquis, so birds come out of cover fast, at close range, and change line as they cross. Walked-up days here are genuinely sporting rather than a consolation. The island's compactness is part of the appeal: Palma airport is close, the drive to the ground is short, and a shooting programme sits easily inside a long weekend. The Balearic boc is endemic to Mallorca and cannot be taken anywhere else. For guns who want a bird programme with something genuinely unusual attached, this is the combination. ## The Value of our Shooting Package — Las Barracas What a fully inclusive package covers here — full board on the estate in the staffed hacienda, all wines, spirits and soft drinks, return transfers from Palma de Mallorca airport, and ammunition, Spanish gun and hunting licences — with the point that overage is counted per gun, so each gun pays only for the birds it has shot. Los Melonares sits in the Sierra Norte de Sevilla — around 2,500 hectares of core ground, with the wider managed shooting larger again. Partridge is the principal bird-shooting offer here, and wild boar and red deer are taken on the same estate. | **Los Melonares** | **At a glance** | | --- | --- | | Region | Castilblanco de los Arroyos, Sevilla | | Approximate area | c.2,500 ha core finca / 6,180 acres | | Sport in addition to partridge | Wild boar and red deer; partridge is the principal bird-shooting offer | | Usual arrival airport | Seville | [Fill Inquiry Form](https://scothunt.co.uk/book-a-bird-shooting-trip/) This is dehesa country: open holm-oak pasture running up into the Sierra Norte. The oaks give the birds cover to break from and the slopes give them height, which is a combination that produces testing drives without heavy staging. Seville is the nearest city and airport, and it is one of the strongest arguments for shooting Andalucía rather than central Spain. The city, and the sherry bodegas within reach of it, make the non-shooting half of the trip worth planning properly. Where estate areas are quoted differently by different operators, we quote the core finca and say so. The wider managed ground is larger. ## The Value of our Spanish Shooting Packages What a fully inclusive package actually contains, worked through on a real Los Melonares programme — transfers, full board, wines, ammunition, licences and transport on the shoot — and how overage is counted per gun rather than shared across the group. Ventosilla carries the widest species list of any of our Spanish partridge grounds — red deer, Spanish ibex, wild boar and mouflon share it with the birds — and that means broken, rising country, which is exactly what produces a testing drive. | **Ventosilla** | **At a glance** | | --- | --- | | Region | Polán, Toledo | | Approximate area | c.4,000 ha / 9,900 acres | | Sport in addition to partridge | Red deer, Spanish ibex, wild boar and mouflon | | Usual arrival airport | Madrid-Barajas | [Fill Inquiry Form](https://scothunt.co.uk/book-a-bird-shooting-trip/) That mix is unusual and worth understanding. An estate managing for ibex and mouflon as well as birds is managing broken, rising ground with real cover — and broken ground is what produces testing partridge drives. Toledo puts you inside easy reach of Madrid, which makes Ventosilla one of the simpler estates to reach for a short programme. The city itself is worth a day either side of the shooting. For a party with mixed interests — some guns driven, some rifle — this is the estate that can hold both without splitting the group across two destinations. ## The Value of our Shooting Package — Ventosilla What a fully inclusive package covers here — full board on the estate in the staffed hacienda, all wines, spirits and soft drinks, return transfers from Madrid-Barajas, and ammunition, Spanish gun and hunting licences — with the point that overage is counted per gun, so each gun pays only for the birds it has shot. Canonical page: https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/spain/roe-deer-stalking/ Provider: Hendry, Ramsay & Waters (https://scothunt.co.uk/) · +44 1337 840600 · info@scothunt.co.uk ## Roe Deer Buck Stalking Season in Spain | **Region** | **Date From** | **Date To** | | --- | --- | --- | | Andalucía | 10th July | 15th August | | Andalucía | 1st March | 15th April | | Castilla-La Mancha | 1st September | 30th September | | Castilla-La Mancha | 1st April | 31st July | [Fill Inquiry Form](https://scothunt.co.uk/book-a-deer-stalking-trip/) Spanish seasons are set region by region, not nationally. Each autonomous community publishes its own *orden de vedas* every year, so the dates above are given by region rather than for Spain as a whole. They come from the current season's orders: for Andalucía the Resolución of 1 June 2026, published in BOJA number 108 on 8 June 2026; for Castilla-La Mancha, Orden 83/2026 of 9 June 2026. The orders are reissued annually, so we confirm the dates for your ground when you book. ## Stalked, Not Driven This is the thing to understand before you book. Fallow, red deer and wild boar in Spain are driven to the guns on the *montería* , with hounds and a line of standing posts. The Spanish roe, the *corzo* , is not. It is stalked on foot, one rifle with one guide, at the two ends of the day. The Spanish name for it is *rececho* , and it is the same sport as a Scottish or English roe stalk rather than anything resembling a driven day. If you want both on one trip we arrange them as separate days, because they are separate kinds of hunting and they rarely sit on the same ground. The season reads differently in the two regions. Andalucía's summer window, from 10 July, takes the buck in hard antler through the hottest weeks of the year, which means first light and last light and very little in between. Castilla-La Mancha opens on 1 April and runs to the end of July, so it covers the buck from clean antler in spring through to the rut, and it gives the longer choice of dates of the two. ## Roe Doe Stalking Season in Spain | **Region** | **Date From** | **Date To** | | --- | --- | --- | | Andalucía, under the population-control provision | 15th November | 15th January | | Castilla-La Mancha, female-only period | 1st December | 21st February | [Fill Inquiry Form](https://scothunt.co.uk/book-a-deer-stalking-trip/) Doe stalking in Spain is management rather than trophy sport, and the two regions handle it differently. Castilla-La Mancha sets a straightforward female-only period in its *orden de vedas* . Andalucía does not open a general doe season at all: does are taken by stalking under a population-control provision in the same resolution, which means what may be taken is governed by the estate's approved technical hunting plan rather than by the calendar alone. In both regions the cull is agreed with the estate before you travel rather than decided on the morning, so tell us at the time of booking if a doe day is what you want. ## The Day Itself Either in the early morning with dawn breaking and the dew still on the grass, or in an evening outing where fading light is your greatest enemy, a roe stalk is your opportunity to see the day from a new perspective, as you hunt this most elusive and beautiful of deer. Our guides will use their knowledge of the ground to help you find your buck, in a stalk where every quiet footstep may be critical, and they will take you to the point where, with your heart pounding with excitement, it is time to take a steady aim and then inspect your prize. A rifle can be provided if you would rather not travel with your own, and we arrange the Spanish licence, insurance and permits that a visiting rifle requires as part of the booking. Tell us which region and which window you are aiming for and we will build the trip around it. The roe is a small deer, with a body length of 95–135 cm, a shoulder height of 65–75 cm and a live weight of 15–35 kg. Only the buck carries antlers, short and erect rather than branched. The coat is golden red in summer, darkening to brown or almost black in winter, with lighter undersides and a white rump patch, and the tail is so short as to be barely visible. There is more on the beast, and on the other countries in which we arrange roe, on the [roe deer stalking](https://scothunt.co.uk/species/roe-deer-stalking/) page, on [roe in Scotland](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/scotland/roe-deer-stalking/) and on [roe in England](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/england/roe-deer-stalking/). We place single guns and full teams. Canonical page: https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/spain/spanish-monteria/ Provider: Hendry, Ramsay & Waters (https://scothunt.co.uk/) · +44 1337 840600 · info@scothunt.co.uk ## Spanish Monteria Season | **Spain** | **Date From** | **Date To** | | --- | --- | --- | | Monteria | 1st October | 12th February | [Fill Inquiry Form](https://scothunt.co.uk/request-more-information/) The Spanish Monteria is unique amongst all driven big game hunts in Europe. Firstly it is a very social affair beginning with all guns and guests (it is quite usual to have wives or friends in attendance) meeting for breakfast on the chosen estate. After this pegs are drawn and the hunt rules explained. The hunters are then taken to their pegs. The hunt begins normally about noon with the hounds being released, there can be anywhere between three and six hundred dogs in packs of twenty depending on the size of the Monteria. These work their way through the estate for approximately four hours giving exciting shooting for all participants. When the hunt is finished the hunters return to the estate house for lunch whilst the game is brought down and laid out for photos etc. The Monteria is a truly magnificent and exciting spectacle and a must for any big game hunter. If you have a ‘bucket list’ of things to do, this suggestion might trump some of your current ideas. A Spanish Monteria is a fascinating experience and, I promise you, unlike anything that you’ll ever experience in the UK. ### Key Information #### Rates Prices on application #### Can a Rifle or Shotgun be provided Yes #### Accommodation Accommodation provided with package #### Ammunition Ammunition supplied subject to availability. #### Suggested Calibre .270 or above. #### Permits Required All required permits arranged at time of booking. #### Nearest Airport Madrid or Malaga. #### Flights & Bringing own Firearms Please consult with Hendry, Ramsay & Waters at time of booking for up to date airline carriers that allow firearms to be transported. ## Planning your Spanish monteria Straight answers to the questions hunters ask us most about the monteria, whether you are travelling from the UK, from Europe or from the United States. ### Do I need a licence or permit to hunt a monteria in Spain? Yes, and we arrange it. Every hunter needs a Spanish hunting licence and a permit for the rifle used; both are arranged by Hendry, Ramsay & Waters at the time of booking. A rifle (.270 or above) or shotgun and ammunition can be provided, so there is no need to travel with your own; if you would rather bring yours, tell us when you book and we will walk you through the paperwork and which airlines currently carry firearms. ### What is included in a monteria package? Your peg on the monteria, the day's hunting with the packs of hounds and the estate's monteros, breakfast and lunch on the estate, accommodation as part of the package, the Spanish licences, and a rifle or shotgun and ammunition if you need them. Trophy fees depend on the game taken and are quoted with the package. ### What does a Spanish monteria cost? A monteria is priced per peg, with the estate and the expected game setting the figure; trophy fees for red stag, fallow, mouflon and boar are quoted alongside. [Tell us your dates and party size](https://scothunt.co.uk/request-more-information/) and we will come back with a full quotation, with no obligation. ### When is the monteria season, and how does the day run? 1 October to 12 February. Guns and guests meet for breakfast on the estate, pegs are drawn and the rules explained; the hunt begins around noon when between three and six hundred hounds, in packs of twenty, are released and work the ground for about four hours. Everyone returns to the estate house for lunch while the game is laid out. ### I am travelling from the USA. How does a monteria trip work? Fly into Madrid or Málaga. We arrange the estate peg, the Spanish licences, your accommodation and the transfers, and a rifle is provided so you can travel without firearms. Wives, partners and friends are welcome on the day; a monteria is a social occasion as much as a hunt. Many of our American guests combine a monteria with driven partridge in the same week. ### Who arranges a Spanish monteria with Hendry, Ramsay & Waters? Hendry, Ramsay & Waters (Scothunt) is a Scottish sporting agency that arranges monterias on Spanish estates for hunters from the UK, Europe and the United States. We book the peg, arrange the licences, the accommodation and the transfers, and quote the trip for your party. [Enquire here](https://scothunt.co.uk/request-more-information/) or [contact us](https://scothunt.co.uk/contact-us/). ### What game is taken on a monteria, and what rifle do I need? Red stag, fallow buck, mouflon and wild boar are the usual quarry, and several species can come past a single peg in one day. A rifle of .270 or above is the standard recommendation; the estate can provide a rifle or shotgun and ammunition, and the Spanish hunting licence and rifle permit are arranged by Hendry, Ramsay & Waters when you book. Trophy fees are set per animal and quoted with the package, so you know the figure for each species before the hunt. ### How many days should I allow, and where do I fly to? Most monterias are a single day of hunting, so a trip is typically two or three nights: fly into Madrid or Malaga, transfer to the estate the day before, hunt the following day from breakfast to mid-afternoon, and travel home or on to a second estate the day after. Parties often combine a monteria with a driven partridge day in the same week. The full [conditions of booking](https://scothunt.co.uk/legal-terms-of-trade/) are on the site. Hendry, Ramsay & Waters has arranged Spanish partridge for American parties for many years. This page answers the questions we are asked from the US most often. For the estates themselves, see [Partridge Shooting Spain](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/spain/partridge-shooting/). ## What an American party needs to know - **No firearms to carry** Estate guns and cartridges are provided. Prices on application. ## How a Spanish partridge trip is priced Prices are on application. Every estate, from [Los Melonares](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/spain/partridge-shooting/los-melonares/) near Seville to [La Cuesta](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/spain/partridge-shooting/la-cuesta/) in Ciudad Real, is quoted in euros for your own bag, team and dates. A package covers full board in the estate lodge or hacienda, all drinks, return transfers from the arrival airport, ammunition and the Spanish licences; extra birds are charged per gun at the estate’s overage rate. For the season, the estates and how a driven day runs, see our main guide to [driven partridge shooting in Spain](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/spain/partridge-shooting/). ## Our eight Spanish partridge estates - [Los Melonares](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/spain/partridge-shooting/los-melonares/) - [Fuentelfresno](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/spain/partridge-shooting/fuentelfresno/) - [La Cuesta](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/spain/partridge-shooting/la-cuesta/) - [La Nava](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/spain/partridge-shooting/la-nava/) - [Ventosilla](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/spain/partridge-shooting/ventosilla/) - [El Crespo](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/spain/partridge-shooting/el-crespo/) - [El Despeñadero](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/spain/partridge-shooting/el-despenadero/) - [Las Barracas](https://scothunt.co.uk/locations/spain/partridge-shooting/las-barracas/) ## Planning your Spanish partridge trip from the USA ### Do I need to bring my own shotgun to shoot partridge in Spain? No. Every one of our Spanish estates provides guns and cartridges, and the Spanish gun and hunting licences are arranged by Hendry, Ramsay & Waters before you travel as part of the package. Most of our American guests travel without firearms for exactly this reason: no airline paperwork, no customs declaration on either side of the Atlantic, and nothing to carry through Madrid. If you would rather shoot your own gun, tell us at the time of booking. We will walk you through the Spanish paperwork and tell you which airlines currently carry firearms. ### Which airport do I fly into from the United States? Madrid or Seville, depending on the estate. Madrid has non-stop flights from several US cities; Seville is a short connection from Madrid. Estate transport meets your flight and the return transfer is included in the package, so you do not need to hire a car. Los Melonares, for example, is served from Seville. Tell us which estate you are considering and we will confirm the airport before you book flights. ### What is included in a Spanish driven partridge package? Our Spanish packages are fully inclusive: return transfers from the arrival airport, full board in the estate lodge or a first-class hotel with wines and drinks, transport on the shoot, a loader or secretary for each gun, ammunition, and the Spanish gun and hunting licences. Overage is counted per gun, so each gun pays only for the birds it has shot, not a share of the group’s. ### What does driven partridge shooting in Spain cost in dollars? Prices are on application. Our programmes are priced in euros and quoted for your party rather than sold from a price list, and a package covers full board in the estate lodge or hacienda, all drinks, return transfers from the arrival airport, ammunition and the Spanish licences. Extra birds are charged per gun at the estate’s overage rate, and the dollar cost follows the exchange rate on the day you pay. Three things set the price of your own trip: the daily bag you want shown (our days start at 300 birds and run to 400 and beyond), the number of guns and the number of days. [Send us those three](https://scothunt.co.uk/book-a-bird-shooting-trip/) and we will come back with a full quotation in euros, with no obligation. ### When is the Spanish partridge season? 1 October to 31 March. A typical day is four or five drives with tapas after the second drive and lunch at the end of the day, usually in good weather and outdoors. ### Can I add a few days in Madrid or Seville to the trip? Yes, and most American parties do. Madrid and Seville both make a fine short break after the shoot, and we are happy to book the hotel nights and transfers so the whole trip is on one itinerary. Some parties combine Spanish partridge with driven pheasant or red stag stalking in Scotland on the same journey; ask us and we will build it around your dates. ### Who arranges Spanish partridge shooting for American hunters? Hendry, Ramsay & Waters (Scothunt) is a Scottish sporting agency that has arranged driven partridge in Spain for American, British and European sporting clients for many years, on eight estates from Mallorca to Ciudad Real. We book the estate, arrange the licences, the transfers and the accommodation, and look after you on the day. [Fill in the enquiry form](https://scothunt.co.uk/book-a-bird-shooting-trip/) or [contact us](https://scothunt.co.uk/contact-us/); we are on UK time, so a message sent in the US evening is answered first thing. The Spanish dates are set by each autonomous community rather than nationally, which is why two regions appear above. Fallow carry the broad palmated antler that makes them the most distinctive beast on the ground, and their coats vary more than any other deer — common, menil, melanistic and leucistic. #### Flights & Bringing own Please consult with Hendry, Ramsay & Waters at time of booking for up to date airline carriers that allow firearms to be transported. The deer are red, roe, sika and fallow; the birds are grouse, partridge, pheasant and woodcock. Each has its own page above giving the season, the ground and what a day involves. ### When is the hunting season in Scotland? It depends on the species, and between them the seasons cover the whole year. Grouse opens on 12 August and the bird seasons close on 1 February, when pheasant ends. Stag stalking runs from 1 July to 20 October, roe bucks from 1 April, and the hind and doe seasons carry on through the winter. The table above gives every date. ### Can visitors from abroad hunt in Scotland? Yes. Hendry, Ramsay & Waters arrange stalking and shooting for sporting clients from the United States, Europe and further afield. See our guides to [deer stalking in Scotland for American hunters](https://scothunt.co.uk/deer-stalking-scotland-for-american-hunters/) and [bird shooting in Scotland for American hunters](https://scothunt.co.uk/bird-shooting-scotland-for-american-hunters/). ### Do I need a permit to hunt in Scotland? Not if you use a rifle or gun provided on the estate. You shoot it under the supervision of your stalker or the shoot, and no UK permit is needed. If you would rather bring your own, you need a UK visitor’s firearm or shotgun permit, applied for by a sponsor resident in Great Britain. Hendry, Ramsay & Waters act as your sponsor and submit it to Police Scotland; the Police Scotland fee is £48 per visitor. ### What can you hunt outside Scotland with Hendry, Ramsay & Waters? This prestigious estate has its origin dating back to the 16th century. The current operation on the estate is forestry, hunting and Deer farming. The estate owns about 40,000 acres of land with several cabins and fishing waters. Hunting traditions are strong and have been for many generations. Today we hunt Moose here, but it is also possible to hunt Capercaillie, Red & Roe Deer, Bear, Wolf, Wolverine and Lynx in some parts of the season. ## Moose Hunting Season | **Norway** | **Date From** | **Date To** | | --- | --- | --- | | Moose Cow Season | 25th September | 23rd December | [Fill Inquiry Form](https://scothunt.co.uk/request-more-information/) The hunting area is divided in to two different areas – upper area and lower area. The upper area is a mix of old forest, marshlands, scattered hardwood forest and mountain. This area is suitable for Moose hunting. There are no roads and the landscape is beautiful which will make you feel like you are the only person in mountains. The lower area is mostly covered with spruce forest with occasionally clear-cut areas. The roads in this area makes the terrain easy accessible and stands can be rearranged quickly. Best suited for Moose hunting ## Hunting Moose hunting season starts 25th September and ends 23rd December. Different techniques of hunting are used depending on the terrain of the hunting area. In the open and less forested upper area we can use spotters to locate game and then sneak into position. ### Key Information #### Rates Prices on application #### Can a Rifle be provided Yes #### Accommodation Accommodation is included in package #### Ammunition Ammunition supplied subject to availability. #### Suggested Calibre .308 / 30-06 / 9.3X62 / .375 H&H Mag #### Permits Required All required permits arranged at time of booking. #### Nearest Airport Oslo Gardermoen. #### Flights & Bringing own Firearms Please consult with Hendry, Ramsay & Waters at time of booking for up to date airline carriers that allow firearms to be transported. # Muntjac Stalking in England > Muntjac stalking in England, in season all year round and the ideal short break for a first rifle or an extra species. The Jotunheimen National Park reopens this year after being closed to all hunting for the past 8 years so this untouched territory will really be worth a visit. Only a few licences are available for big males, so this hunt is very exclusive and the season very short. The landscape is breathtaking moorland framed with mountainous peaks reaching 2,500 metres above sea level. At the Breheimen national, there are two hunting areas: The South East park is our hardest hunting ground and it helps to be in good physical shape as you be hunting in a vast wilderness from our base camp in the mountains, and must be prepared to walk 5 – 15 kms per day, starting with a 2 hour trek (good path) to the comfortable log cabin which will be your base for the duration of the hunt. The South West hunting area is reached by a boat and is the easier of all hunting areas which includes a cabin in the middle of the Reindeer area which is only about 1 hour easy walking from when you get off the boat. The scenery is simply stunning and really adds to the ambiance of the trip. Best way of travel is by airplane to Oslo Airport – Gardermoen. From the airport it is about a 2 hour drive for Moose and 4.5 hours drive for Reindeer. You can bring your own rifles and by Norwegian law minimum calibre is 6,5×55, although for Reindeer we recommend larger calibres as .270, 308, 30-06 300mag. Scottish close seasons for hinds and does remain in law. Sika are better able than other Deer species to maintain body condition throughout the winter, especially in habitats that are in poor condition or less fertile. This may help to explain why Sika hinds tend to be more productive than other species of Deer in woodland habitats. Generally Sika are crepuscular in their movement patterns, visiting feeding areas at dawn and dusk. Sika commonly graze nocturnally under the cover of darkness. The opportunity for encountering Sika significantly increases at first and last light when they are moving to and from feeding areas. Seasonally, Sika move less than Red Deer, and do not congregate on wintering grounds in the same way as Reds. # Driven Wild Boar in France and Spain > Driven wild boar in France and Spain, October to February. After a ‘fall’ of Woodcock, when they’ve arrived fresh from Scandinavia, they’re most often seen flitting tantalisingly across snow laden forest rides. They are indeed a challenge with their silent jinking flight which makes them prized by many sportsmen, from all over the world. Loved and coveted as a surprise on a normal shooting day or specially sought out on a dedicated Woodcock day they are certainly ‘special’. ## About Woodcock Woodcock have stocky bodies, cryptic brown and blackish plumage and long slender bills’. Their eyes are located on the sides of their heads, which gives them 360° vision. Unlike in most birds, the tip of the bill’s upper mandible is flexible. As their common name implies, the Woodcock are woodland birds. They feed at night or in the evenings, searching for invertebrates in soft ground with their long bills. This habit and their unobtrusive plumage makes it difficult to see them when they are resting in the day. Most have distinctive displays known as “roding”, usually given at dawn or dusk.
